How to make money on X (Twitter) in 2026
X (formerly Twitter) pays creators directly through Original Content Rewards, which replaced Creator Revenue Sharing in September 2026 and pays on qualified impressions from Premium users. It requires Premium, 500 verified followers and 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days. That is the attention economy. The authority economy — Subscriptions, products, services, affiliate links and paid advice — pays because people trust your judgment, and can work with much less reach.
Short answer
- Does X pay creators now?
- Yes, through Original Content Rewards (payouts every two weeks, $30 minimum) and Subscriptions. Both have eligibility rules.
- What replaced Revenue Sharing?
- Original Content Rewards. Revenue Sharing closed to new enrollments on 7 August 2026 and stopped earning on 7 September 2026.
- What it requires
- Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business; 18+; an available country; 500 verified followers; 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in 90 days; original content. Admission is reviewed.
- Without that reach
- Monetize authority instead: Subscriptions if eligible, sponsorships, affiliate links, products, services and paid private answers.
- Where PayDM fits
- One bounded personal answer for a follower who trusts your judgment. Not a substitute for Original Content Rewards or Subscriptions.
September 2026: from Revenue Sharing to Original Content Rewards
Creator Revenue Sharing is no longer X's active payout program. Guides that list Revenue Sharing requirements describe the program as it was before September 2026.
| Date | What happened |
|---|---|
| 7 August 2026 | X stopped accepting new enrollments into Creator Revenue Sharing |
| 14 and 28 August 2026 | Regular Revenue Sharing payouts to existing members |
| 7 September 2026 | Last day existing members earned under Revenue Sharing |
| 8 September 2026 | X began rolling out access for existing Revenue Sharing members to apply for Original Content Rewards |
| On or around 11 September 2026 | Final Revenue Sharing payout, for earnings through 7 September |

Two economies on X: attention and authority
In one sentence: on X, the attention economy pays for qualified impressions and needs reach; the authority economy pays for trust in your access, analysis or expertise and can work with a small, specific audience.
On X, commercial value does not always track reach. A founder, investor, engineer, analyst or specialist can have a few thousand followers who would pay for their judgment, without ever generating the impression volume a native payout program rewards. Treating those as two separate economies avoids waiting for a payout threshold that is the wrong measure of the account's value.
| Route | What creates value | Who pays | Native eligibility required? | One-off or recurring | Dependence on X reach |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Original Content Rewards | Original posts seen by Premium users | X | Yes | Recurring while eligible | High |
| Sponsorship | Reach plus credibility with a specific audience | A brand | No | Per deal | Medium to high |
| Subscriptions | Exclusive posts, Spaces and access for your most engaged followers | Followers, through X | Yes, creators apply | Recurring monthly | Low to medium |
| Affiliate links | Your recommendations | A merchant, as commission | No | Per purchase | Low to medium |
| Products, courses, newsletter | Knowledge you can package | Followers, off X | No | Either | Low |
| Services, consulting, advisory | Your execution or judgment over time | Clients, off X | No | Per engagement or retainer | Low |
| Paid private answer | Your judgment on one situation | An individual, off X | No | One-off | Low |
The split is an editorial model. Sponsorship sits between the two: a brand pays for attention, but for a narrow professional audience it may be paying for credibility as much as for impressions. The general question of monetizing trust in a person, beyond X, is covered in how to monetize a personal brand.
What Original Content Rewards rewards and requires
In one sentence: Original Content Rewards pays eligible creators every two weeks based on qualified impressions — unique impressions from Premium users on the Home Timeline with at least half the post visible — on content X considers original.
From X's Original Content Rewards help page (checked 2 October 2026):
- Eligibility at application: based in an available country; 18+; account in good standing; a Personal or Business account (political and government accounts excluded); an active Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business subscription; at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days, not counting replies; at least 500 verified followers; and actively posting original content. Meeting these does not guarantee admission; X reviews applications.
- What counts: qualified impressions are unique impressions from Premium Basic, Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business users on the Home Timeline, with at least 50% of the post visible. Repeat, paid, promoted, artificial and fraudulent impressions are excluded.
- What is original: content you personally created in your own voice. Commentary and analysis that add a real perspective count. Copied, minimally modified, aggregated content and other people's cross-platform reposts do not.
- What makes content ineligible: among other things, posts exclusively about monetization coaching or maximizing payouts, automated posting, misleading content, and posts with a helpful Community Note. Repeatedly asking people to like, reply, follow or repost breaks the continuing requirements.
- Payouts: every two weeks, $30 minimum. US creators are paid through X Money; creators elsewhere connect a Stripe account and verify identity with Stripe.
X does not publish a rate per impression, so any "X pays $X per million impressions" figure is someone's own experience, not a program rate. The program is also discretionary: X says it may modify or cancel it at any time.
How Subscriptions are different
Subscriptions are paid by followers, not by X. According to X's Subscriptions help page (checked 2 October 2026), a subscriber pays a monthly price the creator picks from set price points, and gets exclusive posts, subscriber-only Spaces, a subscriber badge, optional subscriber-only replies and, if the creator allows it, direct messages. Creators who meet the eligibility requirements can apply; X says creators can earn up to about 97% of gross Subscriptions revenue, with deductions only for payment processing or app store fees and refunds, and that X itself takes no revenue share.
The difference matters for planning: Original Content Rewards depends on how many Premium users see your posts, while Subscriptions depend on how many followers want more of you specifically. An account with modest reach but a loyal, professional audience may get more from Subscriptions than from impression-based rewards. Check the current creator eligibility requirements in X's Creator Studio before planning around it.
Native gate vs commercial intent
In one sentence: if your account already has qualified reach, apply for Original Content Rewards; if your followers want your expertise, products or access, monetize that demand directly instead of waiting for a payout threshold.
| If your account… | Then | Do not |
|---|---|---|
| Has Premium and meets the impression and verified-follower thresholds | Apply for Original Content Rewards in Creator Studio; keep posting original material | Recycle other people's content or bait engagement |
| Is close to the thresholds | Treat rewards as a possible later layer; build one authority route now | Post about monetization itself to grow; it is ineligible content |
| Has followers who ask for more of you | Subscriptions, if eligible, or a newsletter or membership off X | Promise exclusive content you cannot keep producing |
| Has followers who ask what you use or recommend | Affiliate links, disclosed | Recommend things you have not used |
| Has followers who ask how to do what you do | A product, course or guide | Answer the same question privately a hundred times |
| Has followers or companies asking you to do it for them | A service or consulting offer | Squeeze project work into DMs |
| Has followers asking what you would do in their situation | Advisory for ongoing work, or one paid private answer for a single question | Treat every DM as free consulting |
This is a decision framework, not a prediction of income. Several rows can apply at once.
Followers asking for your take on their situation?
Give them one place to pay for a single, considered written answer instead of free consulting in DMs.
Frequently asked questions
Does X (Twitter) pay creators in 2026?
Yes. Original Content Rewards pays eligible creators every two weeks based on qualified impressions from Premium users, with a $30 minimum payout. Subscriptions let followers pay creators monthly. Both have eligibility requirements.
Is Creator Revenue Sharing still active?
No. X stopped new enrollments on 7 August 2026, existing members stopped earning on 7 September 2026, and the final payout was expected on or around 11 September. Original Content Rewards replaced it.
What are the requirements for X Original Content Rewards?
Be 18+ in an available country, hold Premium, Premium+ or Premium Business, have at least 500 verified followers and at least 500,000 Home Timeline impressions from verified users in the last 90 days (replies excluded), post original content and have an account in good standing. X reviews each application.
How much does X pay per impression?
X does not publish a rate. Payouts are based on qualified impressions, but the amount per impression is not disclosed, so figures quoted online describe individual accounts.
Can you make money on X with a small following?
Not usually from Original Content Rewards, which needs substantial verified reach. But a small, specific audience can pay for expertise through consulting, products, affiliate recommendations or paid private answers, none of which depends on X's payout program.
