Gumroad alternatives for creators in 2026: fees, tax and product fit

Comparison Updated 5 Oct 2026 13 min read

Leave Gumroad only if an alternative fixes a specific problem without losing what Gumroad does for you. Its direct-sale fee is 10% + $0.50 plus card processing, but it is also the Merchant of Record, handling sales tax on every sale. If you want lower fees and still want tax handled, Lemon Squeezy is a Merchant of Record at 5% + $0.50 with processing included. If you sell steadily, a flat-fee store costs less at volume: Stan Store leaves tax to you, while Payhip Pro handles digital EU/UK VAT, US sales tax and most Canadian sales tax. For courses or a full site, Podia fits better.

Short answer

Lower fees, tax still handled
Lemon Squeezy: a Merchant of Record charging 5% + $0.50, processing included, with surcharges for international, PayPal and subscription payments.
Lowest cost at steady volume
A flat-fee store: Stan Store if you can handle your own sales-tax obligations, or Payhip Pro, which handles digital EU/UK VAT, US sales tax and Canadian GST/HST/PST (not Quebec QST).
Courses, website, community
Podia, which bundles them with a store.

Discover brings you new buyers, sales are irregular, or you value not handling sales tax.

Gumroad's current fee and tax model

From Gumroad's pricing page and fees help article, checked 5 October 2026:

  • Direct and profile sales: 10% + $0.50 per transaction. Gumroad states this does not include credit-card processing (2.9% + $0.30) or PayPal fees.
  • Discover marketplace sales: a flat 30% when a new customer finds and buys through Gumroad, which Gumroad says includes all processing fees.
  • No monthly fee.
  • High-volume discount: once paid sales in a calendar month reach $20,000, new direct sales that month cost 5% + $0.50 instead of 10% + $0.50; it resets each month.
  • Refunds: the processing portion of the fee is retained, because processors do not return it.
  • Tax: Gumroad says it acts as the Merchant of Record for all sales and handles sales-tax collection and remittance. One exception it lists: physical products shipped into the EU, where import VAT is assessed at the border instead of at checkout.

So a $20 direct sale paid by US card costs about $3.38 in fees ($2.50 Gumroad + $0.88 processing), and the tax side is handled for you. Gumroad's help article adds that it is not legal or tax advice; your income tax remains yours.

When Gumroad is still the right choice

  • Discover sends you buyers you would not otherwise reach. 30% is expensive, but it is a commission on customers you did not find yourself.
  • Sales are irregular. With no monthly fee, a slow month costs nothing.
  • You want tax handled. Moving to a non-MoR store hands sales-tax registration and filing questions back to you.
  • You sell above $20,000 a month. The high-volume rate halves the percentage on further direct sales that month.

What are you trying to replace?

  1. The fee level, and you still want tax handled? Look at other Merchants of Record, such as Lemon Squeezy.
  2. The fee level, and a flat monthly fee suits your volume? Look at flat-fee stores: Stan Store (tax is yours) or Payhip Plus or Pro (tax handled in the EU/UK for digital goods, the US and Canada except Quebec). Run the break-even first.
  3. Marketplace discovery? Few alternatives offer an equivalent; leaving usually means finding all buyers yourself.
  4. Store customisation or your own site? Podia or an all-in-one creator site.
  5. Courses or a community? Podia, or a community platform.
  6. A simpler creator hub that sells from a bio link? Stan Store; see Stan Store alternatives for its trade-offs.
  7. You are not really selling a reusable product? If buyers want personal judgment, see one-off paid expertise.

Merchant of Record: who handles your sales tax

A Merchant of Record (MoR) is the legal seller of each transaction. When a platform is the MoR, it calculates, collects and remits sales tax or VAT on the sale; when you sell through your own Stripe or PayPal account, you are generally the merchant and those obligations can fall on you, depending on where you and your buyers are. This table only reports what each vendor states; it is not tax advice.

PlatformWhat the vendor statesWhat that means for you
GumroadMerchant of Record for all sales; handles sales-tax collection and remittance worldwide, with an EU exception for shipped physical goodsTax on sales is handled; you keep income-tax obligations
Lemon Squeezy"Lemon Squeezy is your merchant of record"; handles global sales tax and compliance (pricing)Similar to Gumroad on the tax side
PayhipActs as reseller for digital EU/UK VAT; since 1 July 2026, collects and pays US sales tax as a marketplace facilitator and Canadian GST/HST and PST as a digital platform operator, except Quebec QST (taxes, Canada); other taxes are reported to youDigital EU/UK VAT, US sales tax and Canadian GST/HST/PST handled; Quebec QST and other countries stay with you. Payhip does not describe itself as a Merchant of Record
Stan StoreDoes not handle payments directly; payments go through Stripe or PayPalNo MoR statement; you are responsible for your tax set-up
Podia, Ko-fi, Buy Me a CoffeeNo Merchant-of-Record statement on the fee and pricing pages checked; Ko-fi says payments go into your own PayPal or Stripe accountCheck their terms; assume tax set-up is yours unless they say otherwise

This is why a lower fee is not automatically cheaper. Moving from an MoR to a non-MoR store can replace a fee with accounting time or advisor costs.

Alternatives by job

Lemon Squeezy: lower fee, still a Merchant of Record

5% + $0.50 per order with processing included and no monthly fee for selling, plus surcharges for international (+1.5%), PayPal (+1.5%) and subscription payments (+0.5%). Fits: Gumroad sellers who mainly want a lower percentage without taking on tax. Trade-off: no equivalent of Gumroad's Discover audience.

Payhip: tiered plans, tax handled in the EU/UK, US and Canada

Free with 5%, Plus at $29/month with 2%, Pro at $99/month with 0%, plus standard processing on all plans. Payhip says it handles digital EU/UK VAT and, since 1 July 2026, US sales tax and Canadian GST/HST and PST; Quebec QST and taxes elsewhere remain your responsibility. Fits: steady sellers who can move to a flat fee and sell mainly to buyers in the EU, UK, US or Canada.

Stan Store: flat fee, sells from a bio link

$29/month Creator with 0% Stan fee, adding bookings, courses and lead magnets. Fits: creators who sell to their own social audience and want more than downloads. Trade-off: no MoR; no free plan. More in Stan Store alternatives.

Podia: store plus courses, website and community

Mover at $49/month with 5%, Shaker at $99/month with no Podia fee; every plan lists courses, downloads, coaching, community, a website and a custom domain. Fits: creators whose catalogue has grown into a business site.

Ko-fi or Buy Me a Coffee: support pages with a shop

No monthly fee and 5% on shop sales. Fits: creators whose audience mainly supports them and occasionally buys. Not for: a product-led business.

One-off paid expertise, not a product

Some Gumroad listings are really consultations: "send me your portfolio and I'll review it". If each buyer needs your judgment on their own case, a paid private answer may fit better than a downloadable. PayDM handles that one job: one payment, one private question, one personal written reply. It is not a Gumroad replacement for downloadable products, courses or subscriptions. See PayDM for Creators.

Break-even scenarios

Illustrative example. A $20 product, paid by US domestic card, no refunds. The table shows platform fee + processing + subscription per month. Where processing is separate, it is assumed at 2.9% + $0.30 ($0.88 per order), the US card rate Gumroad and Stan publish; Payhip and Podia say processors charge their standard rates. Lemon Squeezy's base fee includes processing; international or PayPal orders would add 1.5% each. Sales tax is excluded.

OptionCost per orderMonthly fixed25 orders ($500)100 orders ($2,000)400 orders ($8,000)
Gumroad, direct$3.38$0$84.50$338.00$1,352.00
Lemon Squeezy$1.50$0$37.50$150.00$600.00
Payhip Free$1.88$0$47.00$188.00$752.00
Payhip Plus$1.28$29$61.00$157.00$541.00
Payhip Pro$0.88$99$121.00$187.00$451.00
Stan Store Creator$0.88$29$51.00$117.00$381.00

What it shows, for these assumptions only:

  • At 25 orders, Lemon Squeezy, Payhip Free and Plus, and Stan cost less than Gumroad direct; Payhip Pro's $99 does not pay off until volume is higher. Of these, only Lemon Squeezy and Payhip (digital EU/UK VAT, US sales tax, Canadian GST/HST/PST) keep tax handling.
  • Stan Creator undercuts Gumroad from the 12th order a month (11.6 orders), because each Gumroad order costs $2.50 more.
  • Between the two Merchants of Record, Lemon Squeezy costs $1.88 less per $20 domestic order; its surcharges reduce that gap on international and PayPal orders.

Scenarios, not a verdict. Change the price and the ranking changes: fixed per-order fees weigh far more on a $5 product than on a $100 one. The options also differ in tax handling, discovery and features, which this table does not price. Recalculate with your own average order value, monthly orders and buyer locations.

Migration checklist

ItemWhat to check
Product files and versionsRe-upload; keep version history somewhere you control
Past buyers' accessWhere existing customers re-download; whether you email them new links
Customer and email listsExport what you can; check consent before importing to a new email tool
Subscriptions and membershipsActive subscribers usually cannot be moved automatically; plan re-subscription
License keysWhether the new platform can issue and validate them
LinksProduct links in posts, videos, newsletters and bio pages
AffiliatesAffiliate links and commission tracking
Discover revenueThe share of sales that came from Discover, which you will have to replace
Tax set-upIf leaving an MoR: whether you now need tax registrations or a tax tool
Reviews and social proofRatings and reviews usually stay behind

Rule of thumb: compare one year of fee savings against the migration time and any new tax costs. If the saving does not clearly win, stay.

Frequently asked questions

What does Gumroad charge in 2026?

10% + $0.50 per direct or profile sale, plus card processing or PayPal fees; a flat 30% including processing on Discover marketplace sales; no monthly fee. Above $20,000 of sales in a month, further direct sales that month cost 5% + $0.50.

What is the cheapest Gumroad alternative?

It depends on volume. At low or irregular sales, a no-subscription option such as Lemon Squeezy or Payhip Free usually costs less per order; at steady volume, a flat-fee store costs less. Check the break-even scenarios and what tax handling you would give up.

Is Gumroad a Merchant of Record?

Yes. Gumroad states it acts as the Merchant of Record for all sales and handles sales-tax collection and remittance, with an exception for physical products shipped into the EU.

Can I move my Gumroad customers to another platform?

You can export customer data and email buyers new download links, but active subscriptions generally have to be restarted on the new platform, and reviews stay behind.
